An Applied AI Engineer takes existing models and makes them useful in a specific product or customer setting. The work is engineering and integration, not training frontier models from scratch.
The title overlaps heavily with Forward Deployed AI Engineer. At Anthropic, Applied AI is the customer-facing deployment function, so an Applied AI Engineer there does what other companies call an FDE. The main distinction elsewhere is that Applied AI Engineer can be an internal product role, while Forward Deployed Engineer is always customer-embedded.
