Forward Deployed Engineers (FDE)
Role Description
Overview
Fredrin is a desktop kanban for the age of parallel AI code generation‚ every ticket gets its own branch, worktree, and agent session, so one engineer can keep twenty tickets moving instead of babysitting one terminal. As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you are the person who lands that inside a real engineering org: you sit with the team, wire Fredrin into their repos, CI, and agent subscriptions, and stay until tickets are actually merging. This is not a solutions-consulting seat with a slide deck‚ you write code in our repo and in theirs. Where an integration is missing, you build it; where a customer's codebase makes agents flail, you fix the context that makes them flail; where onboarding is slow, you turn what you learned in the field into a product change and ship it yourself. You'll be the shortest path between what customers hit on Tuesday and what's in the release on Friday.
Responsibilities
- Lead the deployment and integration of enterprise solutions utilizing service-oriented architecture (SOA), microservices, and cloud platforms.
- Make each customer's repo agent-ready: author their Project Context (AGENTS.md, CONTEXT.md, concept docs, ADRs), tune conventions and skills so Workers stop guessing, and prove it with real tickets running against their codebase.
- Collaborate with clients to understand business requirements through detailed analysis and translate them into scalable system designs.
- Be credible on data handling, explain and configure the conversation privacy gate (agent transcripts, terminal output, and screenshots stay local unless a project opts in) for security reviews and procurement.
- Perform system troubleshooting, conduct vulnerability assessments, and provide ongoing technical support to ensure system security and stability.
- Design database schemas and optimize database systems including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and NoSQL solutions such as MongoDB.
- Facilitate cross-functional communication between development teams, system engineers, security specialists, and clients to ensure project alignment and successful delivery.
Qualifications
- You already run Fredrin. Every applicant should arrive knowing how the product works‚ board, worktrees, Workers, review flow‚ because you'll be teaching it on day one and building in it every day.
- Substantial experience shipping production software, and comfort being the technical face in the room with a customer's engineers on the same call.
- Proven experience in solution architecture, systems engineering, or software development within enterprise environments.
- Strong TypeScript, or the depth to pick it up fast, the whole stack is strict TS (Next.js/React on the front, Node CLIs and an Electron shell on the back).
- Fluent in git plumbing: branches, worktrees, rebases, merge queues, and what actually goes wrong when twenty agents touch one repo.
- Practical experience with AI coding agents in real work, you've used them hard enough to have opinions about where they break and what context makes them stop breaking.
- Working knowledge of Postgres and an ORM (we use Prisma), plus REST/webhook integration work, GitHub Apps, OAuth flows, and third-party API auth.
- Experience working with APIs (RESTful/SOAP), microservices architecture, and container orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex system issues swiftly while maintaining a solution-oriented mindset.
- Strong communication skills for engaging with clients and internal teams across technical disciplines.
- Self-directed. You'll often be the only Fredrin person inside an account and you're expected to unblock yourself.

About Forward Deployed Engineering
Forward Deployed Engineers are embedded directly with customers to build custom solutions, integrate products into existing infrastructure, and bridge the gap between product engineering and customer success. The role combines deep technical skills with the ability to operate in client environments and translate business requirements into working software.
Originally pioneered by Palantir, the FDE model has spread across AI, enterprise SaaS, and cloud infrastructure companies. FDEs write production code, architect integrations, train customer teams, and feed product insights back to the core engineering organization. At companies like OpenAI, Salesforce, and Databricks, FDE teams are treated as elite engineering units that can ship custom solutions in days rather than quarters.
Typical FDE stack: Python, TypeScript, SQL, REST/GraphQL APIs, cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure), and increasingly LLM APIs and AI orchestration frameworks. Strong communication and the ability to context-switch between technical and business conversations are as important as coding ability.
