Customer Engineer I – Semiconductor Metrology Equipment

$52K - $73K Fishkill, NY, US Mid Posted October 07, 2026

Role Description

Want to advance your career in engineering without waiting years for someone above you to move? Being good at your job shouldn't mean getting stuck in it. At GTI, your expertise is recognized, and your career will progress with your abilities.

WHAT WE DO

  • Improve, service, sell, and install semiconductor metrology equipment
  • Founded in 2012 by two industry veterans, each with more than 30 years of experience
  • Service over 200 customers across all major semiconductor markets worldwide

We're now entering a new stage of growth: expanding the team, pursuing larger opportunities, and creating new technical and leadership roles as the company scales.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Beware the OEM who says the only option is to buy their latest tool. Their business model depends on selling new systems. If end users are given another option to extend the life of their systems, the decision now belongs to them. The OEM doesn’t give them that option... We do.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • 2-3 weeks paid training at GTI headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ
  • Work onsite in a customer fab: troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, install, upgrade, and perform preventative maintenance on semiconductor metrology equipment
  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, vacuum, robotics, motion-control, and wafer-handling systems
  • Perform equipment calibration, alignment, and verification
  • Be the engineer the customer trusts: find the problem, fix it, and leave them confident with GTI on the job
  • Document service activity, system performance, and technical findings

WHY OTHERS LOVE THIS ROLE

  • Work a consistent schedule in a consistent environment
  • Build real mastery across a wide range of tools and configurations
  • Room to think for yourself, with experienced engineers available when you hit a roadblock
  • Level up based on skill and initiative, not tenure
  • Competitive pay, room to advance, paid training, and full benefits

WHO DOES WELL HERE

If you are an engineer, you probably already know why you work in this field. When your car needs maintenance, you pull up YouTube before calling the shop because... how hard can it be? When something breaks, your first thought is, "Let me take a look."Semiconductor experience is a plus, but the most important quality is knowing you are the person who will figure it out. We can provide the schematics and teach you the systems, but we can't teach you the instinct to keep working on a problem until it makes sense. If you are able to take ownership of your work, continue to grow your skill, and truly care about what you do, GTI will provide the environment for your career to thrive. That also means if you just want to fly under the radar, this is not the right position for you. We are committed to recognizing your abilities and creating opportunities for people to move forward in their careers, and that only works if you want to grow too.

WHAT YOU GET

  • $25–$35/hour based on current level of experience
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Travel expenses and per diem

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting ability
  • Technical degree, military technical training, or hands-on mechanical/electrical repair experience (automotive, heavy equipment, HVAC, manufacturing, etc.)

  • Familiarity with vacuum systems, pneumatics, electronics, or semiconductor processes
  • Comfortable diagnosing and repairing complex equipment independently
  • Strong computer skills and ability to document work clearly
  • Able to travel occasionally and work independently at customer sites
  • Able to work closely with operations, engineering, and support teams

About Forward Deployed Engineering

Forward Deployed Engineers are embedded directly with customers to build custom solutions, integrate products into existing infrastructure, and bridge the gap between product engineering and customer success. The role combines deep technical skills with the ability to operate in client environments and translate business requirements into working software.

Originally pioneered by Palantir, the FDE model has spread across AI, enterprise SaaS, and cloud infrastructure companies. FDEs write production code, architect integrations, train customer teams, and feed product insights back to the core engineering organization. At companies like OpenAI, Salesforce, and Databricks, FDE teams are treated as elite engineering units that can ship custom solutions in days rather than quarters.

Typical FDE stack: Python, TypeScript, SQL, REST/GraphQL APIs, cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure), and increasingly LLM APIs and AI orchestration frameworks. Strong communication and the ability to context-switch between technical and business conversations are as important as coding ability.
