Job Title: Member of Technical Staff, Forward Deployed (US Gov)

Job Type: Full-time

Location: Hybrid - Washington, D.C.

The Role

We’re hiring an MTS to work on applied AI systems across research and production. This role spans model experimentation, infrastructure, and deployment in high-assurance, mission-critical environments, including forward-deployed work with strategic partners.

What You’ll Work On

  • Build and maintain data pipelines for model training, evaluation, and research workflows.
  • Design and run RL environments for experimentation and training.
  • Develop and scale model inference systems.
  • Implement and maintain SDKs and integrations across frontier AI platforms.
  • Build agentic systems (multi-agent, tools, RAG) using modern LLM stacks.

Take systems from prototype* production, with reliability and security in mind.

  • Work directly with partners in forward-deployed settings on sensitive, high-impact use cases.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong Python engineer with end-to-end ownership experience.
  • Experience with LLMs / agentic systems (LangChain, LangGraph, or similar).
  • Built or maintained data pipelines / ML infrastructure.
  • Familiar with RL workflows or simulation environments.
  • Experience with distributed systems or inference scaling.
  • Comfortable in high-security / high-reliability environments.
  • Able to operate independently in ambiguous, partner-facing contexts.

Preferred

  • Experience in regulated or mission-critical domains.
  • Familiarity with Vertex AI, Bedrock, or similar platforms.
  • Background in security, infra, or high-reliability systems.

About Forward Deployed Engineering

Forward Deployed Engineers are embedded directly with customers to build custom solutions, integrate products into existing infrastructure, and bridge the gap between product engineering and customer success. The role combines deep technical skills with the ability to operate in client environments and translate business requirements into working software.

Originally pioneered by Palantir, the FDE model has spread across AI, enterprise SaaS, and cloud infrastructure companies. FDEs write production code, architect integrations, train customer teams, and feed product insights back to the core engineering organization. At companies like OpenAI, Salesforce, and Databricks, FDE teams are treated as elite engineering units that can ship custom solutions in days rather than quarters.

Typical FDE stack: Python, TypeScript, SQL, REST/GraphQL APIs, cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure), and increasingly LLM APIs and AI orchestration frameworks. Strong communication and the ability to context-switch between technical and business conversations are as important as coding ability.
