The Forward Deployed Engineer role was built to deploy enterprise software inside customers. In 2026 the deliverable is increasingly a deployed AI system. We measured how far that shift has gone across 264 active FDE postings.

One in four FDE roles now requires AI skills

30% of the postings we track (78 of 264) require AI skills: building retrieval-augmented generation over a customer's documents, wiring up agent workflows, or evaluating model output before it reaches production. That is a step change from a year ago, when most FDE listings were standard integration and data-pipeline work.

AI FDE roles pay a 7% premium

AI-focused FDE postings carry a median base near $202K, a 7% premium over the broader FDE median. The reason is supply. The candidate pool that can both ship LLM systems in production and run a customer engagement is small, so companies pay up for it. If you can do both, you are rare, and the market is pricing that.

The AI skills FDE jobs ask for

Ranked by how often each appears across all 264 postings:

AI skillPostingsShare of all FDE roles
RAG (retrieval-augmented generation)6725%
Prompt engineering4818%
OpenAI4216%
Claude4216%
Vertex AI3413%
Anthropic3011%
Gemini239%
LangChain228%

Retrieval-augmented generation leads, which fits the core job: making a model useful over a specific customer's proprietary data. For the full role guide, see Forward Deployed AI Engineer and the AI FDE salary page.

Methodology. Computed from 264 active Forward Deployed Engineer postings tracked by FDE Pulse. A posting counts as AI-focused if its title or required tools indicate AI or GenAI work (RAG, LLM providers, prompt engineering, agent frameworks, and similar). The pay premium compares the median base of AI-flagged disclosed postings against the median of all disclosed postings; base salary only. Skill frequencies count how many postings mention each tool. The dataset refreshes each build. Last updated 2026-06-01.

Frequently asked questions

What share of Forward Deployed Engineer jobs require AI skills?
In this study, 30% of 264 FDE postings (78 roles) require AI skills such as retrieval-augmented generation, LLM integration, or model evaluation. A year ago most FDE work was standard enterprise integration; AI deployment is now the fastest-growing slice.
Do AI FDE roles pay more?
Yes. AI-focused FDE postings carry a 7% premium over the rest, with a median base near $202K. The premium reflects a small candidate pool: engineers who can both deploy LLMs in production and work directly with customers are rare.
Which AI skills do FDE jobs ask for most?
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) leads, followed by direct experience with model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, prompt engineering, and orchestration frameworks. The table above ranks them by how often they appear across postings.
