Forward Deployed Engineer is one of the fastest-growing roles in enterprise software, but published pay data is thin and contradictory. So we computed it from the source: every active FDE posting we track. This report covers 264 postings, of which 183 disclosed a salary range. All figures are base salary only.

What Forward Deployed Engineers earn

The typical disclosed FDE posting lists a base range of about $151K to $233K, and the midpoint of those ranges sits near $198K. Across the full sample the spread is wide, from $68K to $1200K, because the title covers junior implementation roles at smaller firms and staff-level positions at AI labs. Company stage and seniority drive that spread more than location does.

FDE salary by seniority

The midpoint base salary climbs with level across the postings that disclosed a range:

LevelPostingsMidpoint base
Mid-level128$188K
Senior / staff25$230K
Manager / lead28$237K

The jump from mid-level to senior is where AI-lab compensation starts to separate from traditional enterprise pay. For per-company numbers, see the FDE salary hub.

FDE salary by metro

Among postings with a disclosed location and pay, the metro midpoints are close, which supports the finding that company and level matter more than city:

MetroPostingsMidpoint base
Austin8$230K
Washington DC6$216K
San Francisco Bay Area42$214K
Seattle5$205K
New York52$190K
Chicago3$188K

Equity is the norm, not the exception

73% of FDE postings mention equity. That matters because the base ranges above understate what these roles actually pay. At AI labs and high-growth startups, the equity grant can rival or exceed base salary over a vesting period, which is why headline total-compensation figures for senior FDEs run far above the base numbers here. Treat the base figures as a floor, not a ceiling.

Why FDE pay is unusually transparent

69% of the postings in this study disclosed a pay range. Pay-transparency laws in California, New York, Washington, and Colorado push employers to publish bands, and many of the companies hiring FDEs post in those states. For job seekers, that means you can anchor a negotiation in real posted numbers rather than guesswork.

Methodology. Figures are computed from 264 active Forward Deployed Engineer postings tracked by FDE Pulse, of which 183 (69%) disclosed a full pay range. Salary figures are base only and exclude equity, bonus, and benefits. The typical range uses the median of disclosed range lows ($151K) and highs ($233K); the single-number figures use the median of each posting's range midpoint ($198K). Seniority is derived from job-title analysis; level and metro breakdowns exclude buckets below the minimum sample. Equity prevalence is measured from explicit equity mentions in posting text. The dataset refreshes as new postings are added and filled roles are removed. Last updated 2026-06-01.
